Catherine Ford was raised in Bloomsbury by her grandmother and mother. As a child, Ford suffered anxiety due to an obsessional-compulsive disorder. Ford started acting in her teen years and joined a member of the National Youth Theatre. She was accepted to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. But after just one few weeks, she realized it was not suitable for her. Ford then applied for a place for the Central School of Speech and Drama and was accepted on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford completed her degree in 1993 however in the meantime she already had made her television debut in the 1991 season of Surgical Spirit; she adopted the professional name "Catherine Tate". Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Her regular work in theatre led her to join The Royal Shakespeare Company, for the 2000-2001 season. Tate was first noticed due to her stand-up comedy in the year 1996.
